Bet you didn't know the Mazda 3 came with a hybrid drivetrain. Well, it did in Japan...why it didn't make it over here remains a mystery. Equipped with an insanely efficient 2L petrol engine (14:1 compression ratio lol) and a 27kW electric motor, Mazda claims a 3.2L/100km mileage. Real life will probably be closer to 4-5L/100kms, and it makes a svelte alternative to the usual Corolla hybrids cluttering up our roads. Funny story is though, the electric drivetrain is licensed from Toyota, ensuring superb reliability and longevity.
 
Outside and inside, the Mazda Axela combines swoopy lines and sexy curves to make a handsome flowing shape. It's well appointed too, with a heads up display as standard and a nice 7in colour display Bluetooth infotainment screen. The boot space is still massive, as the battery is located up front. It drives and behaves like any Mazda 3....except that it's can go up to 900kms on its 45L tank before it needs fueling up again.
